17 May 2024
Trainee doctors are a key workforce in the UK constituting a quarter of total NHS doctors. Despite being an invaluable part of the healthcare system, they are bearing the uneven burden of adverse impact of poor workplace culture. The second project survey was responded by 838 trainee doctors from 30+ NHS Trusts, more than 210 was volunteered to be interviewed, we carried out 50 interviews. This knowledge informed the curation of the second CPD day.
The event aimed to unleash leadership within trainee doctors, to explore career pathways and to have constructive dialogues between trainee doctors and senior leaders from NHS Trusts, NHS England and the GMC.

Feedback from doctors:
“We felt really heard and validated, and you had so much encouragement and trust in ability to be good people. I cannot thank you enough, because we all need to feel that!”
“Thank you, amazing session! Brilliant event! Need more of these!”
“Thank you so much for a great leadership day. It was an amazing reminder of how the system should work and how people should be. And I will definitely be in touch about future academic opportunities.”
This is what doctors think the best they learnt on the day
There are more options than I think and that the culture of healthcare is changing to be more accepting of work-life integration and more importantly, the flexibility for us to live the lives we want and get to love the lives we have
I got to know NHS heros stories, get more attached to health care system. I got ideas 1st time in my life about compassionate leadership. Motivated to be educator. I got the courage to ask the questions and comments on the mic 🙂
I am not the only person who has struggled in the past with career choices. Alot of people have similar experiences to me. This is very reassuring.
Meeting other trainees and clinical leaders
Realising what your strengths and weaknesses are l, what brings you joy, and building your career to match that as much as possible
This is what doctors said about the day
A very useful day. I especially enjoyed being able to listen to and question all the clinical leaders and professors
It was a beautifully organised program, with very enlightened speakers
This was such an incredible session. It was so insightful, motivating and inspiring and all of the speakers were so encouraging and gave such brilliant inputs and advice. Really loved the overlying context to encourage us to pursue the lives we want, which has made it much more possible to stay in the NHS for a longer career, instead of feeling the urge the feel abroad for better working conditions. Furthermore, Dr Wang’s final slides were such a beautiful summary of this event and the overlying research and was such a wonderful blend of humanity and academics. Thank you so, so much for this session.
Recommendation from trainee doctors
I wish that I could have attended both sets of seminars. It was difficult to choose and everything was potentially useful to know.
Please do more of these! Possibly nationally to make them more accessible and/or encourage our Trusts to help fund them to increase accessibility
